Smyth & Helwys Author Spotlight An Interview with Scott Hughes Scott Hughes is a storyteller, old soul, and recently retired accountant. More importantly, he is a husband, father of two adult children, father-in-law, brother, son, and lifelong Christian living out his faith at First Baptist Church of Asheville, North Carolina. He spends his time serving his church, singing, enjoying the arts, and improving his skills as a golfer. He serves on the boards of several nonprofits and believes that solutions to issues of social justice require the partnering of such agencies with good people of faith. Finding Venice is his first book. What were you hoping to accomplish when you sat down to write Finding Venice (I Hear It’s Nice This Time of Year) ? When I began writing Finding Venice it really started out as my attempt to document our journey through our daughter’s major stroke at age 29 so that when and if Megan came back from this catastrophic illness, she might have a record of all she had lived through and survived. I also hoped to document and offer ideas to others about how we came upon treatment opportunities including the helpful advice and stories of others who have endured illness including their experiences that we read during this time as we simply tried to stay sane.” At that time (about 19 months after the initial stroke) each day was still pretty intense. Life was complex and still unfamiliar. The adrenaline was only beginning to subside and mentally I was still a mess, not really having dealt with my own stress, fear and particularly the recurring anger. My faith was particularly in disarray. I began one night typing on my computer and for over two months I don’t think I missed many nights after we had Megan down for the evening. I often wrote over three thousand words a night, and often into the wee hours of the morning. It was therapy for me. I never expected the book to see the light of day. By reading it again, I found that it had the capacity to help me recognize our own movement toward what I called our new normal.” Writing also allowed me to work through my own crisis of faith and helped me examine my own beliefs. It eventually brought me closer to God in a way I never expected. I added the epilogue in 2023 after an editor friend read it. She said I needed to answer the obvious question which was How is she now?” How did you come to the title, why Venice? As for the title, our dear friends Jon and Kim Miller sat with Linda and me early on in this journey at dinner one night during a weekend break from our rehab activities in Atlanta and probably when we were most vulnerable. They understood better than most folks who were ministering to us exactly what we were going through. Their daughter had suffered a traumatic brain injury about nine years before Megan’s stroke. Kim told us a story someone had shared with them during their daughter’s hospitalization that offered the idea that before the injury occurred, they had been on a planned journey perhaps to Paris. But because of these events, they had to change their plans, and now it looked like they were headed toward Venice. It was not the same. It was not what they had planned for. It looked very different from Paris, but that would be okay because, as she said, I hear Venice is nice this time of year.” (Ch 14) With all the noise” around us at the time shortly after the initial shock of a stroke at age 29, for some reason, that metaphor offered some important truth” to me. The life we had all planned, worked for and expected for Megan would now change. The direction of her life and ours would now be very different. But we would eventually arrive at a destination (Venice not Paris) that, although unfamiliar and difficult to get to, had the potential to be good.
